Căn cứ vào điều 3 Luật Xây Dựng 2014, tổng thầu xây dựng là đơn vị duy nhất ký kết hợp đồng trực tiếp với chủ dự án đầu tư để nhận một, một số, hoặc toàn bộ công việc của dự án xây dựng.
Hình thức chính của tổng thầu gồm các loại phổ biến sau đây:
